Unit 1 was about one device: yours. Unit 2 hands you a whole small network, the kind that runs a home, a small office, or a school computer lab, and makes you responsible for it. Across six topics you troubleshoot it when it breaks, document every device on it, upgrade it to meet real needs, and secure it with firewalls and segmentation.

The setting is a SOHO network (small office / home office): a modem, a router, a switch or access point, and the endpoints that share them. That one step up from a single device changes the job. A slow laptop affects one person; a failing router takes out the whole lab. Evidence now comes from several devices at once, and reading that pattern is the new core skill. How the unit builds

The six topics follow the same arc as Unit 1, scaled up. You start by restoring a broken network (2.1), because nothing else matters while the lab is down. Then you make the network legible: documentation that names every device by its MAC and IP address (2.2). With a documented network you can improve it deliberately, choosing devices and media that fit real constraints (2.3) and adding advanced features with AI as a checked assistant, not an oracle (2.4). The last two topics turn to defense: first name the vulnerabilities and their impacts (2.5), then apply firewalls and segmentation to contain them (2.6).

How to use this unit

Work through the six topics in order. The routine is the same as Unit 1: read the free study guide, do the interactive practice, then take the topic quiz and review misses against the essential knowledge. The difficulty steps up here by design. Unit 1 problems had one signal and one cause; Unit 2 problems make you combine signals, like an APIPA address on three laptops plus a dark status light on the switch, before the cause is visible.

Two habits carry over from Unit 1 and one is new. Keep diagnosing before you act, and keep matching named threats to layered controls. The new habit is document as you go: a network you have not documented is a network you cannot troubleshoot, secure, or hand to a teammate. The unit scenario grades you on exactly that.

When you finish all six topics, you are ready for the Unit 2 test and performance task, and for Unit 3, where the same skills apply to designing multi-segment networks from scratch.
