AP Cybersecurity Study Guides

Free unit study guides for all 5 AP Cybersecurity units. The most complete free AP Cyber review resource available, built for the 2026–2027 launch year.

AP Cybersecurity is a brand-new College Board Advanced Placement course launching nationally in fall 2026. It is the first AP course focused entirely on cybersecurity, covering how threats work, how defenders respond, and how organizations protect their systems at every layer: physical spaces, networks, devices, and applications. The first AP Cyber exam is in May 2027, and the course is designed to be accessible without prior programming experience.

What Is AP Cybersecurity?

AP Cyber teaches students to think like both attackers and defenders. You will learn how social engineering and phishing attacks exploit human behavior, how physical access controls protect buildings and hardware, how firewalls and network segmentation defend against intrusion, how authentication and encryption protect devices and data, and how organizations detect when attacks have already occurred. The course is built around the College Board V.1 framework and spans 5 units over a full academic year.

Who Should Take AP Cybersecurity?

AP Cyber is a strong fit for students interested in computer science, IT, or security careers, but it does not require any programming background. It pairs well with AP CSP (which covers programming and computing concepts) or can stand alone. Students who enjoy problem-solving, enjoy understanding how systems can fail, and are interested in tech careers will find this course engaging and directly relevant to modern job markets.

How to Use These Study Guides

Work through units in order, since later units build on the security frameworks introduced in Unit 1. Each guide covers the essential knowledge items from the College Board framework, explains the core concepts with real-world examples, and highlights the vocabulary and distinctions the exam tests. Pair the guides with the practice exam and daily practice questions for the best results.

Unit Topic Class Periods Core Skills
Unit 1 Introduction to Security ~21 Analyze Risk
Unit 2 Securing Spaces ~10 Mitigate Risk
Unit 3 Securing Networks ~26 Mitigate Risk, Detect Attacks
Unit 4 Securing Devices ~23 Mitigate Risk, Detect Attacks
Unit 5 Securing Applications and Data ~30 Mitigate Risk, Detect Attacks

Everything you need to prepare for the 2027 AP Cyber exam:

AP Cybersecurity is a new College Board Advanced Placement course launching nationally in fall 2026. It teaches students how to identify, mitigate, and detect cybersecurity threats across five units covering physical security, networks, devices, and applications. No prior programming experience is required.
The first AP Cybersecurity exam is scheduled for May 2027. The course launches in the 2026–2027 school year, making those students the first group to take the AP Cyber exam.
The 5 AP Cybersecurity units are: Unit 1 (Introduction to Security), Unit 2 (Securing Spaces), Unit 3 (Securing Networks), Unit 4 (Securing Devices), and Unit 5 (Securing Applications and Data). The course follows the College Board V.1 framework effective fall 2026.
No. AP Cybersecurity is designed to be accessible without prior programming experience. The course focuses on security concepts, threat analysis, and defensive strategies rather than writing code. Students with no CS background can take it successfully.
AP Cybersecurity has a different focus than AP CSP. CSP is more programming-oriented with pseudocode and algorithms, while AP Cyber focuses on security concepts, threat identification, and defense strategies. Neither requires prior coding experience, but AP Cyber has more applied scenario-based content.
