A while loop is the right tool when you do not know the count in advance, which is exactly the case for taking a number apart digit by digit. The trap is the zero case: a loop written as "while there are digits left" runs zero times for the number 0 and reports that 0 has no digits.
What you are given
Nothing is given. Write a class named Digits containing exactly the four static methods described below. Assume every argument is zero or positive. Do not write a main method.
The question
(a) public static int count(int n) returns how many digits n has. The number 0 has one digit.
(b) public static int sum(int n) returns the sum of the digits of n.
(c) public static int lastDigit(int n) returns the final digit of n.
(d) public static int reverse(int n) returns n with its digits reversed. Leading zeros simply disappear, so 100 reverses to 1.
What the reader is looking for
Write class Digits with the four static methods exactly as described. No main method.
Part (a) must return 1 for the number 0. A plain while (n > 0) loop returns 0, which is the bug this part is about.
Every loop here must change n, or it will never end. The verifier gives up after fifteen seconds and reports a timeout, not a wrong answer.
