AP Networking Exam Format & Scoring

How the exam is structured, what question types to expect, and how the four skills are weighted.

Important: AP Networking is a pilot course. The College Board has not yet published the official number of questions, time limits, or section weightings. The structure below reflects the course framework and is updated the moment official details are released.

What the framework does confirm: the exam is digital, it is weighted around the four core networking skills, and it emphasizes applying those skills to authentic scenarios rather than recalling isolated facts.

What We Know From the Framework

  • Digital exam. AP Networking is built as a digital exam of essential technical networking skills.
  • Skill-weighted. Your score reflects how well you demonstrate the four skills, with heavier weight on the technical categories (Connect & Configure, Secure, Troubleshoot).
  • Scenario-based. Expect stimuli such as network diagrams, device configurations, and troubleshooting scenarios you must analyze before answering.
  • Career-aligned. The exam validates skills mapped to the NICE Workforce Framework and a CompTIA-aligned credential.

Skill Weighting (Framework View)

Skill Category Emphasis
Connect & Configure Core technical skill — expect significant weight
Secure Core technical skill — expect significant weight
Troubleshoot Core technical skill — expect significant weight
Collaborate Integrated across tasks, including AI-assisted teamwork

Exact percentages will be confirmed by the College Board. We will publish them here as soon as they are official.
