Far too many things are spawning

This page is part of Intro to Java with Greenfoot. It assumes you have reached lesson 2.6. Opening it is not counted against you and is not tracked as progress.

What it actually means

A percentage chance checked inside act() is a chance PER FRAME, and act() runs many times a second.

The usual causes

Ranked by how often each one turns out to be the answer. Work down the list.

  1. A spawn chance that sounds rare, like 5 percent, firing dozens of times a second.
  2. No counter or timer limiting how often the spawn can happen.
  3. Spawning in the world act() and in an actor act() at the same time.

How to fix it

Raise the number you pass to getRandomNumber, remembering the check runs every frame. One in fifty per frame is still several a second. For real control, count frames and spawn only when the counter comes round.
