2.7 Four keys, four separate ifs

Four keys, four separate ifs

Unit 2: Variables, Decisions, and Input · Lesson 2.7 Keyboard Input · code exercise, graded

Four questions asked every frame, all four of them. Chain them together and the player loses the ability to move diagonally.

What to write

  1. Move 3 left, right, up or down when that arrow key is held.
  2. Use four SEPARATE if statements, not an else if chain.
  3. Holding two keys at once must move the player diagonally.

up is a SMALLER y. Down is bigger. This is the one that catches everybody once.

Your code

Press Run to watch your code on the grid. Nothing is recorded by Run, so press it as often as you like. Step goes one frame at a time, which is the view that actually explains what act() does.

What it is checked against

These are the examples you can see. There are also 3 hidden cases with different setups, so printing the answers below as text passes nothing.

Example 1: what we set up

Greenfoot.__keys("left");
World w = new World(30, 30, 32);
Harness h = new Harness();
w.addObject(h, 15, 15);
h.act();
System.out.println(h.getX() + "," + h.getY());

What it should print

12,15

Example 2: what we set up

Greenfoot.__keys("down");
World w = new World(30, 30, 32);
Harness h = new Harness();
w.addObject(h, 15, 15);
h.act();
System.out.println(h.getX() + "," + h.getY());

What it should print

15,18
